The Heartstart initiative started at CCSC in 2012 and inolves training pupils and staff in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and emergency first aid. The project in run in conjunction with The British Heart Foundation and The West Midlands Ambulance Service and was started by former member of staff, Mr C Helm, after his young daughter survived a cardiac arrest as a result of prompt CPR.
Most pupils in the school have now completed the initial training and will have on ongoing programme of refresher courses. The training is now being extended to local primary schools and this has already included St Margarets Primary.
Fundraising to purchase defibrillators is another aspect of the Heartstart initiative and in 2013 a charity auction night raised over £2000.
Mr C Dunn now leads Heartstart within the school.
