Our Curriculum Intent

Within the Geology Department, students follow a coherent and knowledge-rich curriculum that develops understanding of Earth processes, materials and history over five years. Core geological skills are embedded from the beginning, allowing pupils to progressively build confidence in identifying rocks, interpreting landscapes and using evidence from fossils and strata.
Geology provides students with the opportunity to explore the Earth’s story across deep time. Pupils study the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, the role of plate tectonics in shaping the planet, and the evidence that fossils provide for evolution and past environments. This programme of study encourages curiosity about the natural world while preparing students for GCSE success and future pathways in science, geography and environmental careers.
Three years of study culminate in entry to the WJEC GCSE Geology qualification.
The GCSE Geology course is assessed through written and on screen examinations and includes the following key areas of study:
- Earth materials: minerals, rocks and the rock cycle
• Surface and internal Earth processes: weathering, erosion, plate tectonics and hazards
• Fossils and evolution: evidence for past life and environmental change
• Geological time: stratigraphy, dating methods and Earth history
• Applied geology: resources, sustainability and human impacts
• Fieldwork skills: observing, recording and interpreting geological evidence in the field
Students are supported through a wide range of resources, practical activities and opportunities to develop their understanding beyond the classroom.
