In their science lessons students will gain an appreciation of the world around them through theory work and practical lessons. They will develop scientific skills and the ability to apply what they learn in lessons to help them in understanding the wider world. When they leave CCSC students will have excellent and useful scientific skills to take into further education and their future careers.
Science underpins many aspects of modern life and in order for students to fully understand the scientific principles and be successful at school and in the future, the science department has a strong focus on students being able to know more, remember more, understand more and apply more knowledge. This is done by using and recapping the Crucial Knowledge constantly, meaning all students feel confident with their learning and are able to make excellent progress.
The Science department has five fully equipped science labs. The practical work they complete in the labs will range from dissections of hearts and lungs (biology), making sparklers and investigating the conditions of combustion (chemistry) and exploring friction and the energy stored in a spring (physics). All of our science staff are fully qualified science specialists and teach in all science disciplines. Lessons are a mixture of practical and theory work, with students fully utilising iPads and other technology.
The science staff share a love of learning and understanding how the world works, and feel that imparting this enthusiasm to the students is a key part of their job. We have six full-time science teachers and one part-time. These are supported by two full-time science technicians.
The science Instagram page is very popular in school and is regularly updated by Miss Edwards with lots of things including science in the news, revision tips, competitions and examples of students work.
The science department runs an after school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) club that is well attended by students of all ages. The STEM club takes part in local and national competitions. Mr Farr is our STEM lead and organises regular events with local businesses where students get to see and meet people who work in scientific jobs.
Science booster classes are held each week and are well attended by our GCSE students.
