Our Curriculum Intent
The science course at Chesterton Community Sports College covers all aspects of the science National Curriculum as well as including a few extra topics. The topics taught in Year 7 and 8 are designed to enable the students to gain an excellent understanding of the basic principles in various topics. These are then expanded on at GCSE level, starting in Year 9. For that reason the science course can be considered a 5 year curriculum.
Year 7 and 8
The content taught in Years 7 and 8 reflects the National Curriculum and broadly follows the Exploring Science scheme of work. As a department we have modified this scheme of work to more closely follow the GCSE scheme we use. This enables students to achieve a solid foundation of all the key concepts required for further study at GCSE level. Regular recap and use of the Crucial Knowledge is built into lessons so that students are confident that they know more, remember more, understand more and can apply more. Investigation and practical skills form a large part of science in years 7 and 8.
Year 9, 10 and 11
At the start of year 9, pupils will embark on the AQA GCSE course. By the end of the 3 year GCSE course they will either achieve 2 GCSEs in Combined Science or 3 GCSEs in Separate Sciences. The pathway shall be decided at the end of year 10. The course is broken up into topics of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. At the end of each topic there will be an assessment to track pupil progress. Regular recap and use of the Crucial Knowledge is built into lessons so that students are confident that they know more, remember more, understand more and can apply more of their learning.
Extra Curricular Opportunities:
At CCSC there is a well attended STEM club. In this club you will learn how Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics can be used to tackle real like scenarios. From robotic challenges, to building rockets, to tackling global problems. If you’re passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and enjoy working as a team then this club is for you!
