The MFL department continues to grow in strength and size and is one of the school's core subjects. Our most recent set of GCSE results (2014) were excellent with 92% of year 11 achieving a GCSE grade A* - C. In Spanish 94% of those entered for GCSE achieved grades A* - C and in French, 89% of the entry achieved GCSE grades A* -C.
Department staff are extremely hardworking and offer extra time with pupils at lunch time, and after school, to ensure pupils approach their GCSE and all their MFL studies with confidence, to ensure success, and help ALL pupils be the best they can be. We are all well qualified, specialist teachers, who plan varied, interesting and rigorous lessons to ensure maximum interest and progress from all pupils. Every year, pupils also have the opportunity to work with foreign language assistants.
The MFL department occupies an attractive suite of rooms above the school entrance, including access to the school’s conference room for group work, and private space for recording of coursework. The whole department is light and airy and all areas have pertinent and attractive displays to encourage learning at every opportunity.
The MFL department believes firmly in enrichment and every year offers a trip abroad. In June 2014, we took a group of pupils to Barcelona, Spain. Pupils experienced a very different culture in Spain and visited many fascinating sites including Camp Nou, Park Güell, Sagrada Familia, la Boqueria market and Barceloneta beach. The department has also taken pupils on visits to Belgium, Normandy and Paris.
For 2015, a visit to Madrid, Spain is planned and will be open to pupils from all year groups.
The department also runs a World Languages Day each year to celebrate languages and cultural diversity.
