Our STEM Club pupils learnt how to build, program and control autonomous LEGO robots to complete a series of short, exciting space missions, demonstrating their skills at the challenge event at RAF Cosford. They also researched, designed, planned and presented their own solution to a contemporary scientific problem developed by LEGO Education with NASA - How Can Humans Survive in Space?
Our pupil's developed valuable skills throughout the challenge; devising strategies, working in a team, developing research skills and building their self-confidence. On the day they entered four competitions which saw them discussing their robot design with RAF engineers, completing seven mini space based challenges with their robot (including deploying satellites, collecting moon rocks and fetching astronauts back to base!), building an escape vehicle in 10 minutes as a team and presenting their research on How Can Humans Survive in Space.

Research from EngineeringUK, who run the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge, shows that communicating engineering careers to young people is vital for the future of the British economy. Chief Executive of EngineeringUK Paul Jackson said: “In order to meet the country’s demand for engineers we need to double the number of graduates and apprentices entering the engineering industry. Programmes such as the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge aim to help young people from all backgrounds understand the variety, excitement and opportunity presented by a career in engineering.”
