Upon arrival pupils were given the opportunity to change their modern money into some Victorian pounds, shillings and pence which could be spent in shops such as the sweet shop and the bakers. This was an exciting chance for pupils to show their maths skills when working out conversions. Pupils then went off in their groups and explored the town and got to see what life was really like in the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee; 1897.
Whilst in the town pupils got to experience the small steam train up to the clay mine where a video experience was shown of what life was like in the clay mine at Blists Hill over 100 years ago. Pupils also got the chance to make candles and bricks in the traditional Victorian fashion, both processes were thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and left them with a handmade souvenir from their trip.
For lunch Pupils experienced real Victorian chips cooked in beef fat. This delicious lunch was, in many cases, washed down with some traditional glass bottled Victorian Lemonade.
Overall, a wonderful day was had by all pupils and staff who attended the trip.
We were exceptionally proud of the feedback Blists Hill sent to us regarding our pupils:
"Just a brief note to say how impressed we were with the conduct of the children from Chesterton Community Sports College who visited us on Friday. I had the pleasure of delivering the brick making workshop and the group were universally delightful, striking just the right balance between enthusiasm and focus. My colleague also made candles with them and was similarly impressed. I think the success of the trip was also due to the accompanying staff who were well organised and supportive throughout.
In summary, they were a credit to the school and deserve praise.
I look forward to seeing children from CCSC again in the future."
