In July 2013 an archaeological dig took place in the school grounds. A group of pupils from years 7, 8 and 9 worked with two professional archaeologists on the project as part of Skills Week. After some classroom based work and background historical study pupils were soon immersed in practical work on the school back field.
The archaeologists dug test pits and opened up trenches which the pupils then excavated. The pupils were very enthusiastic and soon grasped the techniques for using spades, trowels and sieves. Almost immediately exciting objects were found which included pottery fragments and a Victorian bottle stopper.
Archaeology was a new subject for the pupils and history teacher, Mr L Mackin, explained that the subject provides transferable skills as well as historical knowledge. The 'Chesterton Dig' was featured in the local 'Sentinel Newspaper'.
