This week Year 11 Triple Science students have been practising their surgical skills! They have put theory into practise to see for themselves the anatomy of the kidney. Students became surgeons for an hour and were actively involved in the precise dissection of the kidney, observing at a cellular level to locate nephrons under a microscope. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to appreciate what they have been learning in the flesh!!
This experience was especially relished by those wishing to pursue a career in medicine. It has been a busy week for prefects Lucie Moss, Pippa Phillips, Megan Futter, Jodie Middleton as well as James Sanderson, Chloe Braxton and Lara Ravenscroft as they have attended a Medical Careers day at Keele University.
The day involved meeting with medical professionals from Keele, Chester and Liverpool Universities as well as the Royal Stoke University Hospital to see exactly what medical schools are looking for from potential future medics, guiding them on career choices and the pathways from student to doctor. They got to participate in a series of interactive sessions with the opportunity to visit the medical labs, look at the anatomy resource room filled with exciting equipment and tools and meet with current doctors (no appointment needed)!
Pupils performed urine testing to find if any samples were positive for diabetes, worked with real human organs and experienced how they were preserved and pacemakers fitted to the human heart, and even measured their own lung capacity. Find all the pictures from the day below!
