The Department
The English Department is a passionate and dynamic team of ten full-time English specialists including our Librarian, each bringing a unique academic background in English Literature, Creative Writing, Advertising & Brand Management and Education. This rich blend of expertise allows us to deliver a diverse and engaging curriculum that inspires, challenges and supports all learners.
Our Curriculum
Our English curriculum offers a rich and varied journey through literature and language. In Year 7, pupils explore autobiographical writing, contemporary fiction, Shakespeare, poetry and film. Year 8 introduces crime drama, Macbeth, cultural and gothic fiction, and storytelling.
In Year 9, students study dystopian fiction, revisit Macbeth, develop opinionated writing and analyse power and conflict poetry.
Year 10 focuses on 19th and 20th century non-fiction, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, and creative writing in our topic 'People and Places'.
Year 11 hones English Language skills while revisiting key literature texts in preparation for final exams.
Our Teaching
Technology is fully integrated into every lesson; pupils use iPads to enhance their learning and record their progress on OneNote, creating a personalised and interactive learning journey.
We also foster a strong reading culture through our online platform, Sora, where pupils can access a diverse library of fiction and non-fiction. Our aim is to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of reading and writing. With passionate teachers and a forward-thinking approach, the English Department is a place where all learners can thrive.
