In July, Head of Mathematics, Mrs C Tilt, attended the 'Bridges International Conference on Mathematics and the Arts' in Coimbra, Portugal. She was one of two UK teachers selected to attend this conference which had school and university delegates from all over the world.
The week long conference provided a fascinating insight into the links between mathematics and art, music, design, architecture, drama and even poetry. Highlights included workshops on the symmetry of company logos, the geometry of woven basket designs in Mozambique, mazes, fractal designs and topological tori.
She said: 'It was fantastic to work with mathematicians from literally all over the world.'
Part of the week involved helping with the construction of the 'Pentigloo', the world's largest Zometool model.
Back at school many of the ideas from the conference have already been incorporated into Maths Club activities.
